Global Premium Brands publish impact on deforestation

Increased transparency: The Forest Footprint Disclosure project
Last February the first results of the Forest Footprint Disclosure project have been published. The objective of this project is to specify the extent to which procurement policies for Forest Risk Commodities such as palm oil, soy, timber and biofuels are linked to deforestation. Global brands such as Adidas, BMW and Nike have cooperated with the research.

Participating companies are requested to voluntarily share information on issues such as risk analysis, sustainable supply chain development and Governance. The outcome  of this request for information is processed and translated into current performance and management of performance improvement.  Last but not least the results are coupled with the impact on deforestation.

Research approach
In the first year of the project 217 premium brands have been approached of which 35 have reacted positively. The report contains not only the information of those companies who participated but also a list of companies unwilling to collaborate to this sustainable initiative.  Amongst the best performers by sector are companies such as L'Oreal (Personal Care and Household), Marks and Spencer (General Retailing) and Reed Elsevier (Other Consumer).
The project is supported by a large Group of investors under which Dexia Asset Management, Triodos Bank, Bank Sarasin & Co. and Pictet & Cie.
