The health sector: In need of a defibrillator?

The Sustainability Monitor for Hospitals
The health sector is under pressure. Managers are struggling with bringing business strategies in line with daily operations, health insurance companies demand more from their customers and in 2025 Holland will be short of 450.000 employees. These are the challenges that leaders in the health sector are facing and this requires strong leadership: ´What is the right business strategy for my organization?’

The solution seems to be clear. Sustainability and social innovation are leading issues since the health sector is focusing on social well-being of people. In practice, this is not always the case. CSR Netherlands concluded that only 4% of the decision-makers in the sector take sustainability into account in their corporate strategy. With the help of practical examples, the roadmap towards CSR is described in the report of CSR Netherlands. Besides the roadmap, a platform is created where stakeholders such as hospitals, health insurance companies and knowledge institutes are brought together to accelerate sustainability and social innovation in the health sector.
Experts are questioning the capability to change of this traditional sector. Especially the service model of the health sector can benefit from innovation. How are organizations learning from each other in order to accelerate change?

The Sustainability Monitor for Hospitals improves innovation
The answer to the question is simple: transparency. On a yearly basis, the benchmark publishes a ranking of Hospitals. This provides insights into which institution performs best on economic, social and environmental aspects. Decision-makers could use this to develop a vision that fits the current changing industry and can develop strategic tools to engage stakeholders such as employees, clients, health insurance companies and the government.
